Coach’s View: October 2017

Preparations for the forthcoming season are in full swing now. It has been great to welcome yet more players into the team and encouraging to see them throw themselves into training right from the start.

With the push to move to 7’s this year, it has meant some changes to the playbooks as we incorporate new positions and rules into the game. However, given we had always looked forward to the 11-a-side game, the transition has been smooth as players are able to recognise quickly what we are looking to do.

One change is that the emphasis this year is very much now on allowing the players to make decisions on the field. The role of myself, and the rest of the coaching staff, is to give them the tools to be able to do this. So, we are mixing in the development of fundamental techniques with a strong dose of theory as to what we are looking for on each play and how that might affect what they do. What it does mean is that the Offence is exciting to watch with their ability to change the play at the line!

As we go forward, we continue to keep adding in new things, building upon the foundations that we have. We are looking forward to testing these new ideas against fellow teams at both the Topaz events and a scrimmage against the Staffordshire Saxons, before heading off to the Sapphire tournament in the new year.

Until then we shall just keep on developing, keep on growing in confidence and, more importantly, keep on having fun.

Also to note; the team will now be training at Roath Recreation ground, 11am til 1pm on Sundays until further notice. New members are always welcome.
