Last Saturday saw a very busy day for the Valkyries, which meant a lot of different things for a lot of different people. For everyone there was probably some nerves and excitement. For the women attending the flag taster day event, there was the matter of having a go at a new sport and meeting a large group of loud Valkyries (anyone who plays us will know of our volume levels!). For the existing Valkyries, it was wondering who would turn up, would they enjoy it and would they come back? We have yet to see for that final point, but what was clear was that everyone did indeed enjoy themselves and had a good laugh.
Several of the Valkyries were also learning flag for the first time, as they had only participated in Sapphire Series. However, both those Valkyries and the hopefully new recruits look like they had played in tournaments already! Some amazing throws, snaps, flag pulls and devious techniques to get past the defender in the different drills. Simply amazing!
Then of course at the same time we were supporting the GB Lion’s Women on their journey to Vancouver, Canada for the World Championships. Recording the total of runs in the game, balls thrown, and the different drills, we calculated an amazing 126km between the 18 Valkyries that attended yesterday, contributing to the overall goal of 8070km (the distance between Granada and Vancouver)! From the three days of different clubs running, lifting, and doing all sorts of other things, they have exceeded the 8070km and ended on a more than respectable 12,504km!
Not only that, but one of our Valkyries attended the preliminary trials for the GB Flag team. This in itself is an excellent achievement, as we all know that’s where the best of the best are invited. Many of you reading this will be aware of the high skills and standards of flag players across the country, and it’s wonderful that Emma’s own skills were recognised during Opal Series. Best of luck to the squad, and we
will be updating you with Emma’s own journey in our next blog post 😉
So yes…busy, busy, busy!
What’s next for us at Valkyries H.Q you ask?! Well with the announcement of our training times and location for the year, training can begins this week! It will take place 11am-1pm at Roath Recreation Ground. Follow the directions to Alder Road as we will be at the opposite end of the community centre, and you shall see us all there!
Over the next few months we will be making plans for another fundraiser for the club. This may be in the form of a car boot sale or another evening event. Stay tuned for more information and if you have anything you would like to donate (even a packet of biscuits, soaps, beans!!) please do give us a message
