Recently we posted about how our very own Emma Underwood had made the provisional GB Women’s Flag Football squad, as they looked to prepare for their European Championship Campaign.
Her selection to the squad meant travelling to Northampton on the 29th April to take part in the GB camp that would ultimately decide the final 12 women strong squad. While this meant that Emma was not able to attend our taster day, it did mean that she was able to compete alongside, and against, the very best that this country has to offer, as well as learn from some of the country’s top flag coaches.
Having excelled for the Valkyries on both Offence and Defence during the last Opal series, on the day, Emma was asked to undertake reps on both sides of the ball, a testament to her ability and skill at a variety of different positions. Always ready to get stuck in and learn new things, Emma relished the opportunity earning some great feedback from the coaching staff.
Unfortunately though, despite a strong performance on the day, it was not enough to secure a place in the final 12. Yet this does not mean the end of the road for Emma. We are thrilled to announce that she has been selected to the Silver Lions Squad!
We reached out to Coach Gambrill, Head Coach of the GB Women’s Flag team, to ask about the Silver Lions:
“The talent pool of female flag players has grown at a rapid rate over the last couple of years. This can be seen in increased competition in the Opal Series, development days and GB trials. Given the limitations on squad size faced by the GB squad, BAFA have initiated the Silver Lions squad. This will serve as a way to allow those players on the fringes of the GB squad to continue their development with the aim that they will feed into the GB squad in time”
Both making the GB provisional squad and then being selected to the Silver Lions is a remarkable achievement. Especially considering that Emma is so new to the sport. All of us on the Valkyries squad are incredibly proud of her achievements and will be looking to help her develop so that she can push into the full GB team.
If you would like to join the team and, hopefully, have the same level of success as Emma then our recruitment is always open. Training is on a Sunday 11-1 at Roath Rec. Just search for Alder Road (opposite end to the community centre) and you will find us!
