We can’t believe a year has gone by since we were television super stars (well, kind of! Superstars). We remember the feeling well, it went a bit like this “OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH WE’RE GOING TO BE ON ITV AHHHHHH”. It honestly did feel a bit life changing though, and it certainly got us some attention from local women and other media stations. Of course there is still much more work to go to get our name out in the Cardiff area, and Wales overall! And we won’t stop until our job is done.
But really, looking at how far we’ve come is always inspiring. We began with a very modest number of about 9 to our nearly 20 strong squad (and we’re still growing!). Like any other club we know some of the difficulties faced with recruiting. Travelling here and there, anxieties about knowing the games, meeting new people. But as we always aim to do, we keep trying out hardest and spread the word – and indeed, we will be playing with more than 7-9 players at Opal this year! Perhaps it’s time for another ITV segment (hint hint ITV!) so the world knows we are still here. 😉
Not only was the ITV segment an amazing opportunity for the Cardiff Valkyries, it was also part of a much bigger picture of women’s American football. Indeed, the women’s game in general continues to grow and more and more women’s teams are being established. More women’s teams are being hosted on television, radio, newspapers. It really is fantastic to see, and we wish the best of luck to all the teams out there starting out and growing.
